The Problem
We all know that Jesus told us to go and make disciples.
The problem is, most of us don't know how to actually
do that.
No matter if you're a pastor, a church leader, or a person with a heart for the kingdom of God, we understand what it feels like to not know how to get where you're supposed to go in a cultural climate of uncertainty and volatility.
We settle with maintaining our programs, protecting our budgets and increasing our creative ways to bolster attendance. But Jesus wants so much more for His church!
The Barriers
Most churches in America function as collecting agencies rather than sending agencies. This is understandable, especially as we see people leaving the Church in droves; we don't want "our people" to go.
This probably leaves you asking: "If my job isn't to put together sermons or provide religious goods and services, what actually is my job?"
But don't worry: you don't have to scrap everything you're doing and start from scratch. You just might need a simple paradigm shift.
The Solution
What if we started with asking new questions? Questions like "Are we creating any barriers that would stop people from being disciple makers?" and "If we are, are we willing to remove them?"
The only way to see movement in your context is to pivot your goal from
gathering people
(creating consumers) to
sending people (creating disciple makers),
from
self-preservation to
participation in the larger work of the Church in your city
to
go
into all the world–into your city!–and make disciples who make disciples,
and to prepare those you influence to do the same.
This is the only way we'll see our churches as they're meant to be: as mission agencies that train and deploy missionaries weekly.
